CA$H - Volunteer Intake and Asset Guide

Join the volunteers who brought over $1.2 million in tax refunds to Greater Portland house-holds last year! CA$H Greater Portland (Creating Assets, Savings and Hope) is a partnership of community leaders and industry experts working together to help empower individuals and families to achieve long-term financial stability; we are an initiative of United Way of Greater Portland. CA$H provides outreach and education about ways people can make the most of their money. CA$H offers free tax preparation and asset-building resources to qualified filers during tax season; helps employers bring financial education tools to their employees; and educates hard-working families and individuals about programs in the community to increase their income, reduce debt, and build savings. At CA$H free tax preparation sites, we prepare and file federal and state income taxes for free helping clients avoid high-priced income tax filing fees and Refund Anticipation Loans. Participants often learn that they qualify for tax credits, like the Earned Income Tax Credit, which can put thousands of dollars back into their pockets.

CA$H Intake and Asset Guides help tax site clients with the intake process, as well as help them connect with local programs and services that can help them make the most of their money. Volunteers for this role need to enjoy working with the public in a friendly supportive manner and should be comfortable conversing one-on-one with tax site clients. Intake and Asset Guides meet with tax filers to discuss asset building and savings options. Intake and Asset Guides make sure all clients have all required documents and highlight key info for tax preparers, and they complete the intake form with tax filers.

The Intake and Asset Guide training only takes a couple of hours and is completed on-site at our Goodwill offices with support from our staff. The ideal commitment is 4 shifts during the tax season However, we certainly will not turn you away if you are only able to volunteer once or twice! Each shift is approx. 4 hours. Shifts are available Tuesday, Wednesday, &Thursday 5-9pm, and Saturday 9am-3:30pm, from mid - January through mid - April. Orientation and training sessions begin in November and go through January 21, 2017.

This opportunity is during dinner time, not to worry, we will have food, beverages and holiday treats on-site to keep our volunteers energized!

If this is not the role for you, but you still want to be involved, check out our posts for information about other volunteer positions as a Tax Preparer, Scheduler, Greeter or Interpreter.
